Description
Right on schedule, Archie, Reed and Skylar hear a loud banging on the door to the lab.
As arranged, Skylar goes out and greets the General and his aids. Thanks to some excellent
planning by Herman Prime, an entirely different dummy lab has been set up just in case
this type of incident were to occur.
Skylar leads the soldiers down a corridor to an elevator. They ride the elevator down
several levels before reaching their destination.
'Just how deep is this lab?' demands the General!
'About 1500 feet.' says Skylar. Luckily Archie had briefed him on what kinds of questions
the General might ask. And sure enough, the General starts firing away at Skylar with
several more questions. Skylar is a quick study and has no trouble answering them all,
even if he has to sling a little BS the General's way. The main thing Skylar knows is
that if you look confident, you can make anyone believe just about anything.
Once at the bottom level, the leave the elevator and march down another hallway to where
the dummy lab has been set up. Reed and Archie are looking very busy studying data on
their computer terminals.
'What is the meaning of this intrusion?' demands Archie!
'I ask the questions around here! blares the General. 'I want to see some results for all
the time you have had and money the we have poured into this project. What have you got
to show me?'
Archie looks at Reed and Skylar, then around the room. He recognizes the friend that let
them know of this surprise visit, but keeps a cool head and doesn't give anything away.
'Before we proceed, I need to see some credentials. Where is the General I have been talk-
ing to?'
'He retired! Now I'm in charge!' the General blares, trying to intimidate Archie. Archie
holds his own and doesn't back down in the slightest. He has had to handle this type before
and knows just how to call their bluff.
The General turns to one of his aids and has him produce the paperwork for Archie. Archie
looks them over very carefully and finally lets on that he is satisfied.
'Just what is it you want to see then, General?' Archie says directing a barely concealed
glare.
'Well, you are supposed to be doing something with teleportation, right? Well, lets see
what you can teleport!'
Archie figured this might happen. While testing their theories about teleportation, they
had built a small scale model that was capable of transporting small objects up to 100
miles in any direction from the lab. Archie asked the General if he had anything he wanted
teleported within 100 miles. The General has an aid give him his brief case.
'Teleport this to my office. It is about 50 miles from here. My assistant can give you the
coordinates.'
Archie keys in the coordinates to the computer and places the case in small model in the
adjoining room. Reed press the send button and the brief case vanishes. The skeptical
General's eyebrows raise just a little when he sees the case disappear. His aid calls the
office to see if the case appeared there. It has to the amazement of several of the workers
who were working near the General's desk.
The General has them open the case and tell him what the contents are. As they list them off,
his aid confirms they are what was in the case.
'Well, I guess I have to admit I am a little impressed by this demonstration.' says the
General in a subdued voice. I was ready to shut you guys down today if I hadn't seen something
like this. I believe we are on to something here. You may carry on with your project, but
don't be surprised if we drop in on you unexpectedly from time-to-time!'
After the General and his aids leave, Archie, Reed and Skylar breath a big sigh of relief.
'I didn't think he'd bluff so easy!' says Archie. 'But now we have to be even more diligent
in our work. Herman Prime has got his work cut out for him now!'
Thank you for taking a peek! Your support is greatly appreciated!

General's are never in charge of the checkbook. What happens when the appropriations committee starts an audit... or worse, cuts off funding :) Yep, they fooled the General, but a bean-counter is sure to follow the money. Fantastic story.
