Description

Circa 1960: A young bryster - aged 4-5 years - is taken by his father to Newcastle Central Station to view steam locomotives. He was not impressed - scariest thing I ever saw at the time. Taken by my father and found recently in my mother's belongings after she passed away. Coincidently, the loco behind me is an A1/A3 built in 1945 - the same class as Flying Scotsman of which I attempted to make a Bryce model several years ago. Comments welcome. My parents took me to Readings Southern Region station to see Father Christmas arriving for the Co-op around about the time this was taken. I completely missed him as I was more interested in the engine - obviously, they didn't terrify me as much as they did you. :-) I remember watching the WIP posts of your flying Scotsman model - it was really beginning to look good. Shame you were unable to complete it. Such detail. Amazing.

To expand a little on the story, my father and I were invited to take a ride to the engine sheds on the engine's footplate, but no amount of persuation would get me onboard. What made things worse was that I would not tell anyone why I was scared. The fact was that the firebox was terrifing to my child eyes. I imagined being thrown into the fire! As for my Bryce model, my pc at the time simply couldn't handle it and nor could Bryce. Today, with my health problems, thinking in such complex 3d terms is becoming a real problem.
