Description
The Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) is a small lizard that lives in semi arid areas of (mostly) southern states. I haven't seen one since I was a kid in Colorado.
The Horny Toad - as we call them, is easily small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. It is the state reptile of Texas. It is in decline, considered endangered and protected by law. It was already dusk as I was driving home, so had to use flash on this.
Worth a zoom to see the scales and horns! Thanks very much for looking and thanks for your recent comments.

Wow, what a cool little guy; his expression reminds me of a man I worked for decades ago. Wonderful shot!

Beautiful photo. Nice he didn't get scared and run off. They can run quite fast. They can also bite. My brother and I saw several on Twin Peaks, San Francisco, back in the 1960s, though they were mostly a light yellow color. I wonder how intelligent they are. Some exotic pet stores sell them as pets. The last time I saw one was in such a store 20 years ago in the town I now live in in southern Sweden. It went out of business - Swedes don't really understand these animals and their needs. I've often wondered what happened to the poor creatures. Thanks for posting this. I'll print it and hang on my wall at work along with other North American critters I have there. Keep up the good work! :-)

Cute little guy. Stellar flash shot of this blast from the past, Maria, a reptile having evolved from its distant dinosaur ancestors. Too bad they are on the endangered list.
