Description

I wasn't planning to post another photo today, but we've had a pretty spectacular lightning storm tonight, so I thought I'd share this one. This is the house across the street from us. It looks like that lightning bolt is hitting it's chimney, but it's actually a pretty good distance behind it. I've never had much luck photographing lightning, so I was pretty happy with the way this one came out. I didn't take the time to set up my tripod, so this is handheld at 1/15th sec, F3.2, ISO 200. Please zoom.

Brilliant! We had the mother of all storms last week, but I was too busy looking after distressed dogs to take any photos!

A great shot of my favorite subject. I usually have to plant the camera on a tripod and shoot fifteen second exposures. Out of 100 exposures I may have six that have lightning and maybe if I am lucky one that I end up keeping.

Spectacular!!! Lucky to have it line up right over the chimney like that. I also loved your colorful Monteray Bay photos. Just trying to consolidate the posts so I can tell myself it is ok to spend time here since I am exercising at least some self control :)

I'm skipping ahead only to comment on some more recent pieces---NOT because the pieces in between are any less worthy! For a handheld (1/15th of a second is pretty freakin' slow for handheld), you did very well. Beautiful peach-rust-red hues around the lightning, and wonderful how you caught it touching a chimney. If that's just illusion---in case the bolt is way behind the house---it's still caught beautifully. And the cloud is all lit up from it, and the rest is deep shadow and blues and dark greens. For a quick capture, it has all kinds of mood and highlight. And the house seems without inhabitants...wonderful mood, Claude.
