Description
I think many of you will know the astronomical artist, David A Hardy, who has also done many classic album covers, (Hawkwind ones being my own favourites!)

I was, of course, hugely flattered when he suggested a joint project, combining my 3d work with his 2d work. We quickly settled on a subject, my "Colliers" moon landers on one of his lunar landscapes with dramatic Chesley Bonestell stye peaks and craters.
It took a bit of bouncing back and forth to find a workflow that we were both happy with. I set up a ground plane and front projection for Dave's landscape, and then we experimented with lighting angles and positions of the ships. We put the big one in first, and then the other two. Some trial and error in finding good positions.
I then typically sent back several images, the render of everything, a render with just the ships with a transparency channel, and a render with a featureless surface, so the shadows showed as clearly as possible.
My shadows were based on a completely flat landscape, so Dave then corrected them to flow over the craters properly.
I think the biggest change we made was that I really cranked up the global illumination, so the shadowed parts of the ships were much brighter.
I was not at all sure when we started if our styles could blend in one image, (DH had no doubts!), but we are both very happy with the final image.
Which is attached!

Good perspectives, great imagination on your part, and excellent rendering of a realistic scene. Almost looks like a photograph. Congratulations on excellent work.

To Dave and Nick, an excellent collaboration as I believe that Chelsey would have been very impressed buy both of your efforts! It looks just like a picture that I would have found gracing the pages of Colliers Magazines back in the late 50's. Dave was the man that got me to join the IAAA back in 2003 and for that I will always be grateful as he's is one of my all time favorite Astronomical Artists! And Nick, you modeling skills stands on its own merits for outstanding modeling using Lightwave which I might add is not an easy modeling app to master and ones that I feel Nick knows like the back of his hand. Your modeling work is some of the best that I have seen using this program. I have always admired and have deep respect for your modeling skills my friend. Dave, your work speaks for itself in shear scope and presentation, brilliants in all respects. Well done gentlemen! With warms regards, David Robinson Artist Member IAAA since 2003
