Description

So, this is what I got up at 7am sharp for on the 9th of July, 2015, and what caused me to finish the other one (Blue Angel 2015) and make my first gallery post here. Just figured I might as well share it here, it's on my blog anyway... I'm still on the high from posting that first one. It doesn't look so bad at this resolution, but there are a lot of problems with it... There's lots of pokethrough. Tail, hair, jewelry... Just standard stuff, really. I had a pretty hard time posing his tail. It still looks awkward to me... I don't think it was really meant for sitting... Or at least, I haven't figured out how to make it work, yet. It turned out weirdly angular in places -- and in the full resolution image, there are a lot of things I'm going to have to postwork out of it, weird fold lines, mysterious creases, weird shadowing... places where the textures don't match up for some reason... The faux-caustics are probably going to need some postwork, especially in the shadow of his tail, where they just drop off completely, with a really sharp edge. The bubble is actually really low-res - you can see sharp edges on it in the full picture (which I didn't post), and I didn't have it in me to go in and switch it with a higher-poly primitive at the time, ha ha... I spent quite a while fiddling around with its materials to try to get it to look even remotely bubble-like, so saving the material and doing it over again wasn't something I wanted to do. There's still time for that. A lot of time. It's not like there's anything going on in my life right now... Anyway, inside of that thing is a tome. Not sure how visible it really is...I thought of adding some kind of light source to illuminate the bubble, but I couldn't get it to work out. I always get caught up on the lighting. I still can't really figure it out, it's one of the most difficult parts of arranging a scene for me. The ice throne thing... It's actually really low-res... not sure what to do about that except for a whole lot of postwork. I'll just have to play around with it. As for clutter and flavour, I was going to add whole bunch of jellyfish, but it seemed to do fine with just one... and it would slow down the render time even more to fill it up with stuff. I thought about adding seaweed, but with the lighting effects, I'm not sure if more clutter is worth it... Trial and error, I guess. I'll try another one with more stuff and see how much I can load it up with before the program crashes. ;p Or not. Sometimes less is more. Damn, I really do just go on and on and on, huh... I really spend too much time alone. :/ Constructive criticism is welcome. I'm really looking for any ideas or tips to make it better.

Excellent composition QuartzWolf! Wonderful work bringing all the different elements together--the merman, throne, and cool glowing orb with a book :)

Thanks so much for your feedback, I feel a little more encouraged about this now. The other day I was trying out some postwork effects on it, so your comment comes at a good time for me. :)
