Description
The kelp forest tank at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It's 28 feet high (it can be viewed from multiple levels within the aquarium) & contains 333,000 gallons of water. Pumps push 2,000 gallons of water a minute through it & a special surge machine keeps the water in constant motion, which the kelp need to survive. It was the first tank in the world to grow California Giant Kelp, which grows 4 inches a day & requires weekly gardening by scuba divers to trim & untangle. And that's a leopard shark near the top of the tank...

Excellent shot - truly marvellous. :-)

It looks so lovely in its growth environment; when found in piles on the beach it's not nearly so nice! Beautiful light coming through the water in this shot!

My favorite place at the Aquarium! Whenever I want a little break I go to the benches overlooking the tank. Great shot.

I can see it now in the work room: It's Sam's turn to mow the kelp! Great scene

I recall a murder mystery I read years ago. This tank was well described ... enough that I recognize it all these years later!
