Description

Okay, I'm not a huge fan of Iray. This is mainly due to the incredibly long render times on my old MacBook Pro. In fact, just for these renders, 3Delight took about a minute a piece while Iray took over 40 minutes each. Since there are gems involved and there are millions of bounces going on, I understand why, but it's still a huge time sink for me. Either way, I wanted to see if I could make the same gems in the Tiara work in Iray like they do in 3Delight. It's an interesting exercise having to deal with the different expectations each one offers. Since Iray is much more realistic, I had to look at the gems differently that I did with 3Delight. I was able to get my hands on the Iray gem shaders from Daz as they were on discount for me. I had to tweak the Emerald one though... it was way to aquamarine for me. Here's the results. Let me know what you think. I like the realism, but I'm disappointed with how it turned out.

This is quite a demanding test for an unbias render engine, is this cpu or GPU accelerated?

It's only CPU even though I have a nVidia dedicated graphics chip. Unfortunately, the 650m GPU isn't very powerful when it comes to Iray and whether I use it in conjunction with the CPU or just by itself, there is little to no difference in render times. I have also found that if I use the GPU for rendering, it makes the Mac OS extremely unstable. Within 10 minutes of finishing a render with the GPU, either solo or together with the CPU, the Mac OS will hard crash. I'm talking complete black screen kernel panic. No other program I have does this and I run a lot of high end programs. Only Daz Studio Iray with the GPU does it. So, I stay away from it for the most part. I use it only when I have a lot of time and want as realistic a render as I can get. I tend to group every object and turn them off to keep the test renders down to a minimum while I'm doing the setup. The problem comes when I do the final render and I always find something I missed and have to tweak and re-render. Ahh... the lament of the perfectionist.
