You did a great job !! Looks to be drawn in graphite. They do have a lot of value range, hard to soft.. but I'd like to see you try charcoal. You can pull out much richer tones if you can learn to control the mess of the dust and smearing. Hope I don't come across as a critic, just looks like you have a good grasp on graphite I thought I'd throw the idea out there. Keep up the great work !! Break a lead : )

That's why I post as a beginner. I appreciate the advice and would welcome any that you or anyone can give. Pencils are hard to work with. I hate all the smearing that comes with it. Charcoals will be the next step then. Do I have the basics of shading down?

A lot can be used to shade with charcoal. From smearing with finger to using cue tip, cotton balls and even a piece of Chamois leather. The charcoal come in different hardness as well. Learning to blend the charcoal to create a line rather then draw one is a great effect. Your eraser will be a often used tool to pull up highlights as well. Laying your work flat with give a better control of fall charcoal dust. It will collect in unwanted areas if not careful. Charcoal is not for everyone, but it doesn't give that silver tint of graphite that so many people do not desire. A little practice is better then all the advice in the world, so jump in there and get dirty ...see what works for you and create some more masterpieces !! : ) Wishing all the best.
