Description

a bird made a nest under my patio cover and she had one baby at least. the baby fell down to the ground and I was afraid that it would go through the fence around the roses. the dogs would certainly kill it in a heart beat. my large female Eve has killed several birds including baby birds. I put the baby in a cardboard box with some dried grass and a small branch to stand on if it likes. the mother bird has been coming and feeding her baby. I think the mother is a hummingbird. I have not seen her hover, but she is so fast at flying and a very small bird with a long beak. I read that some baby hummingbirds looks alike and sex can not be known until they get their adult feathers I have been putting dried dog food in also, but I think the mother is eating it. I hope the baby gets strong enough to fly away. I can not care for it tomorrow, but I hope it survives

Put some water in there Richard and you are doing everything that you can. It doesn't look like a hummingbird - more like a starling or robin.

yes water is good . the mother eats the food you give but also most likely she will make it moist and small so the baby can eat it . the food will then be like baby food.

I have a hard time identifying the fledglings - so I'll be no help. If mom is still feeding it may survive and be on its way to flying. Only the fittest survive.

Great your gesture, Richard, trying to save the little bird: on the Internet there are many sites that explain how to raise and attempt the reintegration of nestlings, though a big commitment. Best wishes!!

Would be hard to tell without more info. Size of nest? Hummingbird nest would be roundish and very small. Better sighting of mother could help, could be hummingbird, but beak doesn't look thin enough on the baby. Coloring on the baby and the beak could be a wren? They are small and fast. Babies can be very hard to ID. Hope this one survives!
