Description

I have to give an explanation of this image and the title. Last weekend here in the Netherlands they had a day at the auto races sponsored by one of our home improvement stores by the name of Gamma (pronounce Ha Ma). They gave free tickets to anyone that wanted to attend. I had never been to auto races before and my husband really likes Formula One races. The Gamma had a special guest to do demos in his Formula One car. He is the youngest ever Formula one racer by the name of Max Verstappen. So my husband and I decided to brave the crowds and go to the Gamma Racing Day Event. It was amazingly fun (we even got free ball caps to shade our eyes from the sun) Max Verstappen sped around the track a few times stopping to do donuts every now and then. But, now I finally get to my photo, the race that really impressed me the most was called a sidecar race. It was motorcycles with a sidecar. The person who rides in the sidecar is called the monkey because they climb all around to help balance the bike as it makes turns and do forth. I could not believe what those monkeys would do in order to balance the motorbike. I kept trying to get photos, but they were very fast. So I am not apologizing for the lack of high quality in this shot. I am just proud of myself that I got it at all and you can see it well enough to see how close that crazy monkey is to getting his behind burned to a crisp. I would also like to quickly thank all who have looked and commented on my other posts. I am not a daily poster for the most part, but I really do appreciate all the comments even though I do not always remember to thank everyone each time I do post. .

This is something new for me but now if I see something about monkeys at motorcycle races I'll know what they are talking about:-) Outstanding action photo. I am proud of you too!

This is a super 'action' shot Katherine and I would have loved to have seen Verstappen doing his thing.

So well caught, and so interesting to read your narrative.

IMHO the quality of the shot is excellent. The light, shutter speed and composition are all perfect. My only suggestion would be this: http://shop.dsehealth.com/uploaded/thumbnails/amb-guy_26_365x365.jpg

Great shot of a difficult subject, nice and sharp If I can offer one piece of advice It would be to get near to the track and get a head on shot where they will slide towards you if they come off on the bend It adds a little excitement to taking the pictures , as for the sidecar rider been there done that but not on a track on rough field tracks and normal roads ( not so much traffic in those days and not so many lawmen about) and never quite as far out as that.

There's also a cross country version which appears even more painful - great title

I checked out your photo in zoom and excellent clarity for a high speed action photo. No apologies needed. Someone here at RR came up with the phrase that "sometimes the subject matter is more important than the quality of the photo". Not that you need to use that phrase for this fantastic photo. I liked Andrew's link to the 'anti monkey butt powder' cartoon.

Is this great ánd so cool, Katherine. I so much love your story, as I of course recognize GAMMA and Max Verstappen. Your photo is formidable, and I'm impressed by the ape with his back almost on the ground. WOW, what would that have been special as I together with you could have watched this super action. Thank you so much for sharing this, my friend!

A great action photo and excellent commentary. Here in the U.S. a sidecar is also know as a 'side hack' so the monkey is often called a side hacker. And the butt burn is also known as 'road rash' but I like your description better.
