Your conscious hides what it thinks you can't handle.
Times of tragedy, times of elation.
As time goes on, you lose grasp on certain things until that one moment.
That one moment that opens the locked stone doors. And all those memories and feelings come flooding like a tidal wave.
Fear, desperation, joy, happiness. An emotional flood gate that causes so much pain until you're ready to break.
The question is, how much fortitude does one have to not break?
