These are called "conks" by foresters & loggers in the Northwest. A conk is a fibrous but sometimes fleshy fruiting body of a wood-rotting fungus that has a definite form and structure. Significance: A conk usually indicates rot close to or in excess of the percentage of gross volume allowing in a merchantable log of any class.
