Description
Gertrude Stein, a well-known American writer and personality of the early twentieth century, famously said about her birthplace Oakland, California "There is no there there". Traveling through the Palouse you might be forgiven for thinking the same thing with mile after mile of apparently empty rolling hills. But there is life there. The few tiny hamlets along Highway 26 owe their existence to the farmer's need for supplies and as a place where their children can attend school. For most of the trip to Palouse Falls, however, all you will see is the occasional small farm.
This image shows a typical setting with an older farmhouse, an even older barn and a shelter for the farm equipment. The vehicle on the right is a tanker truck for carrying water. The 'wings' on either side will irrigate the crops as the truck passes through the rows. Clever, don't you think?
It looks a lot better if you zoom.

A wonderful image of what the countryside is like in the US. This could be anywhere. Tiny towns feet larger towns which feed even larger towns, and it's all about getting crops to market and supplies back to the farmer. It's become one of my favorite sorts of trip, to drive through farm country. Lovely image!
