Description
I got back from a few days away on the coast to find all hell has
broken loose here on Renderosity. A new look, changes to how you
upload artwork, heavy emphasis on social media & a lot of
disgruntled users, some of whom are leaving or threatening to leave
Renderosity. Here's my personal take on it: Change can be difficult
to accept & is almost always met with resistance, but in
general is a healthy & inevitable thing. But changes to an
online community need to be made thoughtfully & with input from
the members of that community. It seems to me that, as with other
changes made in the past here, neither of those were the case this
time & that's why folks are justifiably angry. I don't use
Facebook, Twitter or other forms of social media, so those changes
are irrelevant to me. I'm not thrilled with the new look, but I'm
pretty sure I can get used to it over time. I understand that many
people are upset with the new image guidelines, but personally I
don't like to scroll to see a complete image, generally don't post
over 1200 pixels wide & found that most significantly larger
photographic images, when forced to be compressed down to 512 kb,
were unacceptably fuzzy. Even for images within the new guidelines,
however, 512 kb is often insufficient to prevent degradation of the
image & I would love to see that at least doubled. What I
didn't appreciate was that auto-generation of thumbnails was
eliminated, which was a definite step backwards. And that after I
submitted an upload expecting a thumbnail to be auto-generated, I
was rudely informed that I needed to provide my own thumbnail. And
to add insult to injury, all the other fields I had filled in were
now blanked out (where formerly they had been retained when one
mandatory field was inadvertently omitted). I hope some of these
problems can be worked out & that the folks whose work I enjoy
& admire will hang in there for a while. I plan to stick it out
for now, but if enough of those people leave the site, I probably
will too. As for this image, I took it just a short walk down from
our hotel in Yachats. Unfortunately, I found that there were some
smudges on my lens that affected almost all the photos I took
during this short trip (I'm far-sighted, so it's hard for me to
spot things like that though my little viewfinder). Fortunately,
Photoshop's Spot Healing tool make it easy to eliminate things like
that in most cases... Please zoom.

Okay, one more complaint - it seems that all my paragraph breaks have been removed & my description has all been mashed into one long, ugly paragraph. Can anyone enlighten me on how to fix that?

first, this photo is wonderful, a treat for my eyes and heart! superb POV, wide and colors!
second: I am so agree with you in most points - I would even pay for a forum like ours was - have I to go for Facebook finally??
I don't know what to do as next...
the new large sidebar disturb every photo..

I find your views to be the most concise and well written that I have read in the past day or two! Change is always difficult and in time I hope things settle down once the powers that be are given the time necessary to tweak the new changes. This has been my home for 10 years and I really would like remain here. I agree with most of your points and thank you for a lovely image and tactful and polite comments about the new site and its problems.

Gorgeous....

Beautiful photo.
As for Rendo, I've been here since 2004. Every change brought about kicking and screaming. Life goes on. I'm not leaving. That which does not change stagnates and dies.

Gorgeous photo!

Love the picture. The V-shaped composition is beautifully done!
As for the issues you came back to on RR ... yes, they are legion! The one bright spot that I know you will particularly like is the fact that we are no longer limited to 512kb. The dimensions are reduced, but there is no limit on the file size.
The wrap-around text is horrid, and I'm hoping they'll get that fixed soon. We already got them to give us more text space. When they put the new website up, all captions were limited to 1,000 characters, including the writer's gallery. Now everybody gets 25,000 characters. Of course it's unreadable, since it wraps around into a single sentence, but hey ... at least we have more room! I won't give up. :P
One thing at a time, I guess. Just keeping up with the Forum threads this week is like having a full-time job.

Nice shot.

I'd like to be standing in one of those pools with the salt water and sand gently washing back and forth over my toes. Thanks to your photo I can almost feel it. Well done.
As to the site, yes we are hanging in with wild (maybe unreasonable) hope that most of our needs will be accomodated and "site usability" will be increased dramatically.
