Description
Here's some prehistoric critters to see. The big guy is Elasmotherium. Their kind are related to rhinos (duh?), but are considerably larger. There's nothing in this image to identify scale, but they are essentially elephant sized (Asian Elephant that is). They are about 7+ feet at the shoulder and up to 15 feet long. The horn is speculated to be keratin based (hair and nails) like a rhino's horn so there has never been any physical horn found. The head has a protuberance for a horn and there are some cave paintings that appear to depict this animal and it has quite a large horn. They lived from about 2.5 million years ago to as recently as 50 thousand years ago, maybe even more recent in isolated regions. There are numerous oral stories of sightings and killings of this great beast as evidence that they may have crossed paths with more recent humans. Speculation of course. Elasmotherium model by Dinoraul. I used the Poser morphing tool to give him a bit more of a hump.
In the background you can see some Megaloceros or "Irish Elk". Elk is rather inaccurate though. These cervidae are believed to be more closely related to the modern red deer through modern testing. Megaloceros roamed Europe and Asia during the last ice age with the most recent remains carbon dated at 7,700 years ago. It's earliest ancestors appear in the fossil record nearly 5 million years ago. This species was a large animal being nearly 7 feet tall at the shoulder and have the largest antlers of any known animal up to a whopping 12 feet. That's a lot of head weight. For these guys I used AM's caribou and found a model of a megaloceros skull online from Ericsstudio. I see it at Turbosquid now, but I did not get it from there, because I did not pay as much as the asking price there. I don't remember now. Anyway, when sized up, the skull it fit nicely in the caribou's head and I simply parented it to the head and voila!
The background image is one I took in Colorado. While these animals did not live in North America, but instead Europe and Asia, the mountains still seemed to fit the concept and I'm sure there's some mountains that look kind of like this over in the Urals or Carpathian mountains.
Thanks for stopping by.

Absolutely outstanding work here, Art. Perfect match for the background, and a killer job on those elk. A fascinating lesson in history, bro! Love it.
I've checked out Turbosquid a time or three - they seem a little rich for my blood... They're supposed to have free items, but I've never seen 'em.,, Just expensive stuff.
