Description
The Sensitive Briar plant (Mimosa nuttallii) is a prickly low growing vine that has small round puffball flowers and compound leaves (much like the Mimosa tree). There are several dozen varieties but are all very similar. These tiny puffball flowers are no larger than your thumbnail.
Growing wild in the central U.S. from TX to the Great Lakes, it is also called Cat's Claw, Nuttall's Sensitive Brier, Bashful Brier, Shame-boy, Devil's Shoestrings or Touch Me Not plant -- because when their sensitive leaves are touched or jostled by the wind, they immediately close up on each other.
You can see a short video here that shows this fascinating behavior (starting at 40 seconds in): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TOWs1QDeTs

We used to grow these from seed in the greenhouse for a bit of fun when I was a child! They aren't hardy here and I never saw a flower before, so very interesting photo.

The yellow tips are so festive! I've never seen these. As far as I know they're not a PNW thing, and I haven't seen them in the RGV, either. (Now why on earth have I chosen places to live where the area is known by its initials? I hadn't noticed that before.)
