Description

The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu or "Dragon Slayer" ("Nick" to the Allied forces) was the Imperial Japanese Army's Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter; the parallel Japanese design answer to the Luftwaffe's emergent twin engine heavy fighter in Europe, the Bf-110. The twin-engined, two seat Toryu was initially used as a long range bomber escort but was no match for the single engine Curtis P-40 and was eventually removed from that vulnerable role. It found greater use in both defense of the Japanese fleet as well as an anti-ground and anti-shipping weapons platform. The "Nick" eventually found a limited niche as a bomber interceptor, much like its muse, the Bf-110. With the arrival of the B-29 raids, the Ki-45 performance parameters were hard pressed to match the 10,000 foot altitude of the American bomber (it was reduced to the ignominious role of ramming the high flying bombers, and with the further addition of P-51 and P-47 bomber escorts to the mix, the career of the clearly outclassed Dragon Slayer was brought to an end. A further version the the Ki-45, a night fighter version, was developed and employed in defense of the homeland, and had some success to the tune of 150 kills and the credit of 8 B-29s. About 1,700 units were produced, including variants, but in the end, the Ki-45 suffered the same shortcoming as the Bf-110 against more agile single engine enemy fighters; it was no match for them and removing them from that arena was inevitable. I tried some different techniques on the island that turned out very satisfactory. The 435 million polys on the trees that I grew down in the basement shop helped, but didn't bog down my system. They worked better than any texture mix that I tried in the past experiments. I'm very satisfied with the beaches and shore effects as well. I may move there! Awesome scene- I'm going to have to bite the bullet and play with plants too. And no forest fires? If you aren't quick, most of Singapore and Malaysia may well get there before you!!! ; - )

Getting the background to blend so well with the main subject matter can be a "bitch" and not many can do it quite so well. Slight haze and just enough detail and wonderful sunlight. Great job, "Razer". I like!!!
