combining animal species in one image---which you do from time to time---would feel risky for me, esp if I were penetrating the inner natures of each animal as you do. (Like, "now that I have TWO animals, what do i do next???") I wouldn't have immediately paired horses and eagles, but in your painting, they are siblings. Beautiful forward thrust of the heads, and that wildly flowing neck and front legs of the horse: Your strokes here make that portion a big luminous brown waterfall. The back half of the horse is filled with the ochre brown reds that dominate the sky behind it. That's one imbued horse! The eagle torso is eclipsed behind the horse, which makes its face and wings more dramatic. And that face is fierce, and commands the trajectory of these two magnificently painted creatures. It is the headway. And the wings' feathers ripple almost like flame--esp visible on the top wing. The lower wing blends in beautifully with flow of the horse, and contrasts it by going the opposite direction.

This has one of your "in air" compositions, two beasts flying in space (and yet still feeling rooted); with one of your mythic suns at sunset or sunrise, with those ochre orange brown tones; and a suggestion of mythic smoke or mist. The whole piece is doused in this patina, and the billows at top feel like the billows of a great flame---as if such creatures could only fly through a universe on fire, ie, an inner fire.

An amber toned, ochre toned, autumnally toned image, with flaming creatures framed in a mythic sun with all that billowing smoke around it. Splendid---the two animals could be an image; alone, but the background brings out their power all the more.

Carol, though I've only done 5 comments since last night, I will have to stop for now. SImply because I won't be fresh if I don't stop for a bit. I get immersed in your work, and I go to this deep place, and then if I don't clear out my words, they start to get muddy for me, and I don't want that. But those 5 comments took me over 2 hours, so you know I was truly here. Amazing work, as always, and what a place to end for now: This image is aglow and intense, and, like that eagle's expression, intent on something bigger than a destination: It's intent on glow and fire. A stunning image.

Mark, thanks so much for your beautiful comment. I always appreciate the time you spend viewing, thinking, and writing about my work. An eagle and a horse do seem unlikely animals to share the same space, one a predator, the other a creature of prey. And yet to me they fit together, yin and yang, both powerful in their own right, but also needing and learning from the other to continue their journey. As you noted with great insight, they are racing with great intent, toward something bigger than a destination. Perhaps it is destiny, which is something different for everyone. Perhaps the destination is awareness of who we are, of our purpose for being here, a race to get to where we are supposed to be. I often wonder why I am in such a hurry, so 'on fire' to get wherever it is I think I am going, when in my heart I know it is the journey that matters most.
