Description
I have previously referred to zoos as prisons. Some are luxurious but they are still prisons. The Point Defiance Zoological Gardens in Tacoma, Washington does more than just warehouse the animals, however. They are involved in captive breeding programs and conservation efforts to preserve endangered species.
The red wolf was considered sacred by the Cherokee tribes of Native Americans. Unfortunately this view was not shared by the Europeans who came to North America and by the beginning of the twentieth century it had been largely eliminated from its previous habitat in the southeastern United States. Efforts began to save the red wolf from extinction in 1973 when a captive breeding program was established at the Point Defiance Zoo. Starting with fourteen animals there are now three hundred of these beautiful creatures in existence.
Sometimes humans can begin to reverse the damage they have done. All it takes is the will to act.

A terrific portrait! I haven't been down there for a million years. When we get back in the spring, I'll have to put it on my list. I've got fond memories of the place from my childhood, when it was the closest zoo and major park to our tiny town.

What a beautiful wolf! Great capture, Mark. Yes, is great when humans do something to save endangered animals.
