Description

The fortress of San Juan de Ulloa was first built in 1565 and defeated Sir Francis Drake in 1568. After the Mexican Revolution, the fort was overwhelmed by the fires of a French Fleet in 1838. It was assaulted and taken by the US in the Mexican War and in 1914 during the period of Huerta, Villa, and Zapata. It served as a bone of contention between the various factions of the Revolution until peace. It is a classic example of Vauban construction in which whoever attacks any wall is taken in flank by cannons firing across the face. I also found arrow slits in the construction.
