Description
Seen among the invasive weeds growing near the lake shore. I wasn't able to ID it but it reminded me of the Chinese/Japanese Lantern plant.
I must try to remember to find this spot again to see what these thumbnail sized seed pods look like when they have ripened and dried out.
Thank you very much for your views and comments.

Wow, that is gorgeous; I would have been tempted to pick one and bring it home to examine. You must go back and check on them!

Oh my, a remnant from the scifi movies, Invasion of the Pod People and/or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in this stellar macro of the bizarre and highly veined seed pod, Maria.

This could be Nicandra, or Apple of Peru, which is invasive and poisonous, but has beautiful blue flowers. I was accidentally sold some of this seed in a packet of Chinese lantern seed, and it appears most years here and there in my garden!
