Description

Lower Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park. One of the numerous hot springs we encountered in the southern half of the park (over the volcanic caldera) on our first day's visit. Microscopic organisms called thermophiles account for the rich colors of brown, orange and yellow in the hot water flowing away from the hot springs.

Wow! Such rich colors! I wonder how thick/thin the crust under your feet is. And what temperature is the ground? What did your feet feel like after taking these photos? Thanks for posting all these pictures - it gives us a nice trip to Yellowstone without having to go there. Amazing nature. More, please! Keep up the good work! :-)

I have been fascinated with Yellowstone and the geysers since I can remember. My eldest brother traveled in Yellowstone in the early 70's and took slides (do you remember them). Since then it has been something I would love to see in person. Thank you for giving me another wonderful glimpse Bill! Fantastic image.

It's incredibly beautiful, with all the steam and the colours and the white precipitates all around. I wonder what the first explorers thought when they found it? Wonderful POV and capture!

A great capture, Bill! This is such a fascinating place! It's always amazed me how organisms live in that water. And it has to be a certain temperature range for the different species, which accounts for the bands of different colors.

They've recently discovered that the magma plume under Yellowstone is far deeper and more massive that they'd even imagined.

Well, I've been interrupted a couple of times in your gallery, but I put in a wonderful session here, and unfortunately I have to move on. But, as with Tara's gallery, I'll be back. For now, I get to end on another spectacle of nature, which, like Tara, you capture with real panache and detail. The array of hues here are beautiful; and the opaque almost jewel-like hues formed by the steam make this look like a gigantic geode cut open. The water on the left and the flatter, less colorful land on the right balance out the intense ochres in the center. (With greens and dark browns, etc. Thanks for telling us where those colors come from, I had no idea.) The whites are stunning. And we see them behind this area as well---they're almost like snow. And all that deep green (trees) in the background, with the deep blue sky. A vast shot, actually, it feels huge in scope; with much variation, all handled with deftness, clarity, and gentleness. These places were made for you and tara, and I'm so glad you got to go there. I'll comment on more of them soon, but it's been a real journey for me today. I've been on an amazing trip. Hope you're having a fine time, wherever you are!
