A beautiful bow to the older world of fashion illustration. (Fashion Illustration isn't used anymore in the USA. Photography and computers have taken over.) I love that you gave us only part of this woman's head---that's very much a fashion illustration style. Her eybrows are long flying things (wonderful), and you've filled in her flesh tones "rapidly"---leaving some sections empty---like fashion illustrators often did. Her dress has wonderful "splashing" highlights---as if you splashed the whites on it, freely and rapidly. Lots of energy in that. And her long stockings and gloves are done in long sheer strokes. Her heels are also fast and free, with your whites and blacks: They have that rushed-on quality too. And you use the long silhouettes that those illustrators loved.
Then, you have a beautiful almost Celtic background of green lines---the only other color here except for blacks and whites. And the lines follow her body, like a musical celebration. They're your typically highly articulate lines, which have a life of their own.
The portrait is composed on the paper beautifully. And the upper left---which would be empty, otherwise---is filled with those green lines, balancing out the whole.
It's a very contemporary image, yet it pays homage to a style of illustration that seems long-gone now. (Maybe it's still used in France, but it's definitely not used in the States.) Wonderfully done, Yves. You are deft and so articulate with your brush. You paint "en pointe" sometimes, with great grace and lightness. This is beautifully done.
(This isn't totally related to your painting, but when I see your line backgrounds, I'm reminded of Saul Steinberg's ornamental line and decoration. Here's an example, called "Frozen Music Found Near Radio Music Hall" (in New York City), just for fun...when you get to the page, click on the cartoon: That way you'll see it better. http://www.condenaststore.com/-sp/Frozen-music-found-near-Radio-City-Music-Hall-winter-1939-New-Yorker-Cartoon-Prints_i13769658_.htm)
(And here are 3 links to a famous collection of illustrations for women's styles, from the late 1930's. This studio---like many others---stole ideas from Paris, and sold these sketches to stores all across the US. They made their business on these illustrations. The illustrations are done in simple ink, wash, and a dash of color. Plus whites. I'm giving you 3 links just for fun. That website has them all...they were called the "Andre Studios". And they were very typical of American fashion rip-offs at the time. Click on the illustration, for a larger copy: http://andrestudios.nypl.org/catalog/uuid:a409be83-c49e-408f-e040-e00a180650c3
