Description

I managed to get a few photos at Wind Cave National Park during our trip to S. Dakota. Even with the cloudy and gray skies, it's amazing just how much color there is in the gently rolling hills here. A few bison were grazing peacefully here and there. Sorry for the spotty commenting - I'm slowly trying to catch up... This new system with no email notifications doesn't help at all.... :-P And things are getting even more convoluted at work.. My hours are changing - again - probably next week... It's not that big a change; I'll be working 9AM to 5:30PM, so it's only shifted an hour. But with the time going back t standard time, I'll be driving home in the dark. On the bright side, I get to sleep an extra hour in the morning! LOL Yes, I'm working on Page 22, and hope to have it posted soon. I also just realized I need to get more writing done on Chapter 6. I have it pretty well outlined, I just have to "flesh out" the pages. This will probably be the most intense chapter of the story - hang on, it's gonna be a bumpy ride... Hope everyone is doing well! Thanks for dropping by, and for all your comments and support.

"desolate" comes to mind... wonder how it looked 2000 years ago...

a few scraggly pines and a couple of bison highlight this barren scene, and your unobtrusive logo in the lower right can be a "lesson" for some who have posted really nice captures 👣

I thoroughly enjoy the prairie at this time of year. The grass turns all sorts of colors, and we've been seeing a variety that looks white or silver in the light. Gorgeous! I never tire of looking at the subtle shades and the variety.

another of your sweeping melancholy prairie shots. This one is highlighted by big soft rolling hills in the center of the shot. To me, they're like breads or rolls in the oven. (Go along with me, I just woke up!) And the patches of reddish brown, green, yellow, etc are almost like the hides of large animals like cows, moose, etc. What's also striking in your shot is the scatter of fallen trees, like toothpicks across the hills. And you caught the background hills as misty apparitions---very sweet. (Real quality in them, visually.) This kind of atmosphere strikes me as very difficult for a photographer: not only because of the darkish feel, but because it defies clarity and it coats everything in a gray patina (ie, leaching away colors). But you have a feel for these vast, almost sleepy landscapes, and you capture their grandeur and colors, despite the atmospheric intrusion. Another timeless vista from you, best in zoom, from this sweeping mysterious part of the country. Also, I grew up at a time when bison were going extinct...so it's always nice to see them on the rise again, even if just in small numbers. Those bison have lots of land to graze on...
