Description

The Municipal House in Prague is an incredibly beautiful building decorated in a lavish Art Nouveau style. We went to a concert there one night - it was Mozart's Requiem in D Minor performed by the Prague Symphony Orchestra. The concert hall (Smetana Hall) is a fantastically ornate space & though I'm not at all very knowledgeable about classical music, I thought the orchestra (which interestingly was conducted by a woman) sounded amazingly good. Some background information about Municipal House from a promotional website: "Municipal House in Prague is the city's foremost Art Nouveau building, and one of the finest in Europe. Inside is a magnificent complex of rooms, including the largest concert hall in Prague, an elegant French restaurant, a Czech beer hall style restaurant, a traditional cafe, the first American bar in the Czech Republic and exhibition rooms. Municipal House opened in 1912, having been constructed on the site of the former Royal Court Palace. It gained fame on the 28th October 1918 when the historic proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia took place here." More photos from the interior to follow...

It's rare that I comment on your work as it goes up...I'm usually late everywhere. But before I go to sleep, I gotta comment on your latests, because these latest European photos are starting out just as your other trip photos have: lavishly pouring on us, and filled with your inspiration.

I know the building is the thing, here---and it's a lavish beaut, flowing with art nouveau and rigorous lines and other joys...but I have to talk about the Claude vision too. You got this on an angle, like it's looking out at other people and you're catching it 'unawares'. Almost as if it were a "candid". And the stark brightness is stunning for this facade. I mean, these facades have lots of mystery---art nouveau was designed to have mysteries and hidden recesses as well as bold designs---but your immediate flush of light makes this stand like a huge brass ensemble, announcing itself with grandeur. But you get the mysteries too, in the deep blues, the deep aquas, the deep shadows below the balcony, the deep blues of the upper statuary, and the dark blues of the dome. It's what you do with color, how you coax it, talk to it, draw it out. You get every color to show its best, in shots like these.

Concert halls are fairly new in western history (you may know this): The whole idea of a "large concert" only came around in the mid to late 1700s, give or take. And the halls followed slowly. Yet, as they rose across Europe and then America, they wore the robes of venerable age. So this hall has an air of great age, to denote that great things, venerated by history, will take place inside. And your angle, strong light, strong contrasts, and frontality bring out the nobility of the facade. And those yellows---which are so clear here---are like lights or jewels. I love this shot...and as one who spent a lotta time in these halls when I was younger, I feel right at home with this. I'm a fan of what you do with pictures.

An extraordinary sweet shop for the eyes! As for female conductors, Marin Alsop was our chief conductor at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for a while and recently spoke about the difficulties she faced at first in her home country of the USA . She is the music director of the Baltimore Symphony now.

I'm fascinated by the metal lattice under the balcony. The shells that grace each corner are lovely. Any close-up shots of that in your vast storehouse?

This is beautiful. I've been pouring over the details, enjoying every square inch!
