Description
Roald Dahl, the well known author, was also a pilot in WWII. He wrote about his experience in the second half of his autobiography titled "Going Solo" which begins when he is ~20 and goes off to work in Africa. The book is an excellent look at life in Africa in the 1930s prior to the war. He talks also about several combat flying experiences. This image represents one where he found himself inexperienced, alone, and out numbered by Me-109s over Greece. He knew he could not out-fight them and the Me-109s, being faster than the Hawker Hurricane, would be impossible to out-run. So he did the only thing he could think of, he flew very low so as to make it harder for the German pilots to maneuver into position to aim at him. He talks of flying so low that he had to pull up to clear a low stone wall.
Thanks to Neil Wilson for the aircraft models!
Yeah, I know... I made no effort to accurately reflect the aircraft markings, however the types are correct.
Though the thumbnail is in color I thought the B&W whole image looked better. If anyone cares to see the full color version let me know and I'll post it also.

Very very fine realization, the brown monochromatism give more sense of vintage to the scene !!

I think you did an excellent job visualizing a written account and bringing it to life. Wonderful work.
