Description
As a young girl Tala loved going to the temple and watching the Sun Dancers perform the sacred dance. She would marvel at the rays of light filling the air around the dancers and how the tips of their SunWands would glow and sparkle with energy from the sun. It is believed this is a sign that the Sun god is pleased by the dance and a promise of continuing prosperity for the village. Once she even saw the fire blessing, this is a beautiful display of light and fire falling from the sky.
Tala dreamed of becoming a Sun Dancer someday, but this was not very likely because only young girls that show an ability to draw on the Sun's energy are ever chosen. This is an extremely rare talent and is usually past down through a family's ancestral line. Unfortunately, Tala's family had never produced one with such an ability.
Still she hoped, dreamed and above all danced. Tala loved performing the Sun Dance and she could execute every move with a beautiful fluid grace. She only had a simple cotton dress to ware and in her hand she held a wooden rake from the barn. But in her mind she imagined her dress as the tunic worn by the Sun Dancers and the rake as the golden SunWand.
Her grace and innocence must have been noticed by the Sun god. For one day during her dance she felt the wind change and then a very strange feeling came over her as the air all around her started to glow and crackle. Then it happened, a fire blessing came down from the sky!
At first it didn't seem like a blessing because some sparks started a fire that burned down the family's barn. Tala got very scared and her parents were mad and thought she had been playing with fire. But the event had been seen from the temple and the next morning the Sun Dance Master and her entourage came to Tala's house. The Dance Master said, "We all saw the sign from the sky and our opinion hardly matters, but still I would ask to see you perform the dance."
Tala was a little shaky at first but soon she forgot her nervousness and she performed the dance beautifully. Everyone in the party was very impressed by Tala's natural ability and the Dance Master immediately offered her an apprenticeship. The Sun Temple also paid for a new barn and Tala's dream of becoming a Sun Dancer came true.
