Description

Manual Labor. I believe that was the name of the worker in the straw hat. I understand that the human body can adapt to a wide range of conditions but these guys were working in high heat and brutal humidity. And doing it by hand. I wanted to isolate them from their surroundings and to highlight each man. Their efforts are heroic for they keep Havana running without the use of modern equipment.

Heros indeed! What determination and stamina they must have. There is something of the feel of the Victorian painting 'Work' by Ford Maddox Brown, which you can maybe find at BBC - Your Paintings - Work. A really terrific image, Mark.

my god, another stunning and moving street shot from you, where you truly did isolate each person with hues, light, clarity, etc, bringing home their strength and sheer presence---a mythic presence, as if they represented workers everywhere and across time. And their hues---almost purplish and nighttime---are stunning: They bring out the feeling that these heroes toil in a kind of darkness, hidden from the people who benefit from the results of their labor. Yet you gave them 'glow' (or captured their glow), which shows their heroism all the more. As a street shot, man, you understand the streets. Perhaps something you've understood from early on, and which your life experiences have deepened with each year; all your travels have deepened that sense, either way. What details you bring out: The shiny car on the left, in wonderful red-brown with reflections; the huge truck in the middle, a monolith that could just as well have crawled out from under the street; the pile of earth and pebbles up front, in that steel, coal gray; the front man digging, who kind of speaks for all the men; and the gritty wall on the right, with all the detail, wires, etc. And the 'music' of the men's stance, their 'layout', as if they were doing some ancient dance; and that massive 'wall' at the back of the street---another masterful capture of life, Mark. A great piece of work, and deeply, revealingly human.

It's clear they all work very hard, not an ounce on fat on any of them; what a remarkable shot!

In 'OZ' you would find a road sign nearby, saying: 'Men at work' 😓 - but the saturated colour here on these men, tells the same story and it's very candidly obvious and so well done, Mark !

Cheers BB
