Description

I actually have a lot more photos of Prague that I was planning to post, but I've been focusing on Prague for over a month now & thought it might be time to move on. Right before getting to Prague, my friend Allen & I took one of the optional excursions offered by our cruise line - to the fairy tale like town of Cesky-Krumlov, which is about 100 miles from Prague. Cesky-Krumlov is designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site & here is a brief description from the Unesco web site: "Situated on the banks of the Vltava river, the town was built around a 13th-century castle with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. It is an outstanding example of a small central European medieval town whose architectural heritage has remained intact thanks to its peaceful evolution over more than five centuries." It has a very large castle complex & charming cobblestone streets that wind though the old town center. We had a brief guided tour when we got there & a few hours to eat lunch & walk around the town on our own, but I really would have liked to stay longer, even overnight. Unfortunately, that's one of the drawbacks of cruise travel - not much flexibility. This is a view of the river & part of the castle complex in the background. I "prettied it up" a little by photo-shopping out some construction work on the roofs in the distance (ugly blue tarps) & taking out the dull sky & substituting a different one... Please zoom.

If you know of chipka, here on RR, he's written about Cesky-Krumlov several times, as he lived in Czechoslovakia for a while. But I'd not seen pictures of it. How you get such standout compositions without being the slightest bit 'touristy', I don't know; but this is another of your dramatic compositions which shows off such inner spirit to the place, yet it's not even remotely touristy. It feels about essences. The lines are terrific: You shoot from over this cafe on a boardwalk, and it takes us to the high wall of a facade, in the background. And the river and curved line of buildings opens up the shot on the right. And the facade on the left is a bright focal point. Very dramatic, with hints of street life on the water level, and all that fall greenery. And it makes us feel the enclosed sense of these cities/towns, because most of the shot is within the wall of buildings, with sky only on the top. And your hues are vivid throughout, as always. Fine shot linearly as well as hue-wise, and with a real feeling of being in an old city with high fortress like buildings. And your postwork surgery is seamless, because we don't see any signs of what you removed.
