Description
Still working on this. I think I mentioned that the Cycles SSS node produces artifacts when the there is transparency nearby, and the Firefly SSS doesn't really have the proper reddening effect in Superfly. I've countered that here by combining two FF Subsurface Skin nodes and accentuating the redness via a Fresnel Blend node. Pretty sure that's not physically correct for a physically based renderer, but looks a lot better, in my opinion. (The effect here is still a bit understated, but I can control the level of redness if I want. I don't want it exaggerated.)
This particular render has artifacts (shadows on the outer cheeks aren't properly gradiated), which is perhaps a mistake in my render settings. I'm still learning.
Things that could still be done to improve this particular character:
- New transparency map for lashes—even medium render quality in Superfly makes these particular lashes nearly disappear.
- Continued improvement of the eye shaders. They don't look too bad as is, but still room for improvement.
- Lacrimals could be slightly pinker.
I could also do some work on the teeth, but of course the mouth is closed here.
Anyway, I think I'm getting there in terms of getting Superfly to give me realistic renders with skin.
Forgot to mention that the skin texture is Morris's Krew for Hiro.
