Description

The Arado Ar. E 555 was one of Germany's dreams for a jet powered, long range, strategic bomber that would be able to reach American shores. This iteration was one of various versions proposed by the Arado company in response to the Luftwaffe's so-called "Amerika Bomber" project. They never made it past the drawing board, cancelled because they were deemed too expensive, and more likely because dwindling resources made their development and manufacture improbable. This was to be a six engine version, manned by three crewmen and protected by automated gun turrets in the same vein as the B-29. The chilling prospect of squadrons of these threatening bomb platforms was avoided by Germany's diminished capacity and the "too late" factor at that point in the war. Still, it is sobering to consider what might have transpired in the right circumstances and timing, and with more support for these deadly programs. Fate definitely played Germany the losing hand. I've always liked these almost sci-fi design concepts that the Germans entertained in the war, and I enjoy playing with these "What if" renders.. The non-conventional designs, the very creative application of new concepts in aircraft, and the engineering prowess to realize them is a definite spark to my imagination. The intent of these concepts is the only sobering factor. It is interesting to consider and muse on the possible outcomes that were avoided by the Allied victory. Arado Ar. E 555: Terrific model by Neil Wilson (Neiwil) and generously shared on sharcg in one of his Christmas packages. I won't say which one, because what fun is it to know what's in the wrapped presents? Thanks Neil, "Could I have some more please, sir?" Opel Blitz and Steyer 1500 vehicles: Also very nicely done vehicles from Adh3d and available here on Rendo I believe and at his site. The fueling truck is the Blitz modified with a fuel tank mounted on the truckbed down in my basement workshop. Hangars and buildings from 3dwarehouse with various modelers who I don't remember (my apologies but also my thanks) Ground crew: M4 and great PoserWorld Boilersuit, retextured in the shop. PoserPro, Vue6Ifinite, PS Cs3

THANKS! First, for the great image and history, but also for reminding me of Neil's Christmas give-away. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (despite recent sad events). Keep up the good work! :-)

If the Germans had started the Amerika Bomber project sooner they may have managed to make some bombing raids on the USA, but it would have had little real effect on the course of the war. The effect of the Pearl Harbour attack was hardly beneficial to the Japanese except in the short term; it generated a powerful anger and determination in the American people that powered their war efforts until the war was won. If air raids had reached the USA then the Germans would have found a similar anger generated against them. The war may have taken longer, but the result would probably have been very similar.

Your render is still a fascinating one and I share your interest in these engineering and technology matters. War is mankind's worst invention, but it generates some fascinating technology from the recurve bows of distant eras to the stealth bomber of today.

Well....blimey....I'm truly impressed with both the image and the detailed history...I'll have to make more of these. The positioning of the ansillary vehicles once again gives interest and detail without overpowering the ' pagent queen '....really very well done, I always wonder what people will make of these surprises...but with you I know the result will be awsome, you never dissappoint.....cheers Bill.
