Description
Forget little fireworks! THIS is the REALLY BIG BANG! The 60 cm. (48 inch) mortar Karl! Used by German general von Choltitz at the siege of Sevastopol in the Crimea to bust the massive concrete fortifications at the sea port. The noise from firing this must have exceeded anything built thus far, excepting the 80 cm. super cannon (also used at Sevastopol). For those of you interested in technical specifications, history and so on can check out the web site - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Ger%C3%A4t
The model is in scale 1:72 by Hasegawa and includes a munitions carrier. I assembled it during the 1980s. It took several weeks. Lots of little figures to paint! Also of note, the inner gun barrel in the model is spring loaded so it can move forwards and backwards. The gun can also be raised and lowered.
So, anyone want a BIG bang next new years? Sorry, Karl was scrapped after World War Two. So, guess you'll have to stick to the usual fire works!
It's been a long time since I posted photos of any models, so after the short fire works show last night I felt it was time to show a BIG piece of fireworks.
New Year's fireworks where I live was quite paltry this year, most probably due to the rain. It lasted about 15 minutes. What did go up was, however, beautiful. So that's why I decided to post a photo of The BIG Bang!
Enjoy!

cool photo of this wicked model. I can imagine that the people working with Karl as well as those on the receiving end of Karl's delivery suffered from some serious hearing loss

Awesome little model of a really big gun!... my favorite was the 80cm Dora, This must of been one hell of a gun. one shot of that 7 ton round and it would be bye, bye to what ever was on the receiving end! and like most of the crazily big guns the Germans made, it was to impractical and costly. like all the figures on this... I use to make these but never continued it!

Yeah, I'll bet that would rattle a few windows - in whatever building was left standing.... Very cool model!
