Description

Sacagawea (May 1788 - December 20, 1812) was a Lemhi Shoshone woman who helped the Lewis and Clark Expedition achieve its chartered mission objectives exploring the Louisiana Purchase between 1804 and 1806. Reliable historical information about Sacagawea is very limited. She was born into an Agaidika (Salmon Eater) tribe of the Lemhi Shoshone between Kenney Creek and Agency Creek near present day Salmon, Idaho. In 1800, when she was approximately 12, she and several other girls were kidnapped by a group of Hidatsa in a battle that resulted in the death of several Shoshone. She was taken as a captive to a Hidatsa village near present day Washburn, North Dakota. At approximately age 13, Sacagawea was taken as a second wife by French-Canadian trapper Thoussaint Charbonneau who was living in the village, This picture was taken in Cody, Wyoming on 11 August 2015, Sig... .

A lovely statue of a woman who deserves recognition. She and her husband were instrumental to the success of Lewis and Clark. She even reunited with her Shoshone family on the expedition. I like her on the dollar coin, too!
