Description

Ten miles east of Havana is Hemingway's Cuban home. Finca Vigia, meaning "lookout house" dates to 1886. No visit to Havana is complete without a visit to this landmark. Legend has it that Hemingway came to Cuba for only a short visit and stayed for twenty years. He purchased Finca Vigia in 1940. There, he wrote two of his most celebrated novels: “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Old Man and the Sea”. Open and airy, it can be a bit of a horror show for animal lovers. Some of his happiest and most creative years were spent in Cuba. At first Hemingway was on good terms with the new Castro regime and even presented Fidel with a trophy for winning a fishing contest in 1960. But increasing tensions between Cuba and the United States and pressure from the U.S. government caused him to leave the island in mid-1960. By July, 1961 Hemingway would be dead by his own hand.

The rooms are lovely, but as you say, I could do without the animal heads on the walls. Aside from that ... it looks like a great place to live a good life!

another piece of revelation from your trip...I'd never seen pics of this place. It's a mansion to my eyes, and the interior is quite beautiful with lots of deep shadow, punctuated by heavy light. Your shots show both very well. And yeah, the animal heads are a bit much, but it was Hemingway. A real array of what his place looked like, and the shot in the middle-left has wonderful contrast of shadow and light. Another fine upload in this terrific series.

Hemingway is one of my favorite writers.I love "The old man and the sea". Yes, is creepy for me to see all the heads on the walls,I would prefer to see them on their bodies, alive in the forest.
