Description

Jenny Lake, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. I had pulled over to take a picture of the lake. Not one minute after I had taken the picture, I had gotten into the car and started to drive - I was in second gear and not going more than 15-20 mph, when a wolf crossed the road right in front of me, not more than 30-40-ft ahead. I was totally taken by surprise, had no time to react and within 3-4 seconds stopped where he had disappeared. A faint trail, I didn't see anything, but he was probably watching me. Then I got to thinking, he had crossed the road from the lake side he couldn't have been more than 100-ft away from me when I and a couple of other people took our pictures. So I drove to the Visitor Center/Park Ranger Station and reported my sighting. The ranger had two questions, 1) how long ago and 2) where. I gave her the time and location of my sighting, she pulled out her book and verified that this sighting fell within the range of one of the two packs that roam the Grand Teton National Park. I had worked for over 20 years for the Arizona Department of Water Resources, on average spent two weeks each month in the field collecting data, had seen hundreds of coyotes, but only one possible wolf and that was at the 9,000-ft level in the White Mountains of Arizona near the New Mexico border while we were surveying a cienega and we were not very close. We assumed it was one of the reintroduced Mexican Wolfs. This one at Jenny lake was too close for comfort. The Park Service recommends to keep a distance of at least 100-ft from wolfs and grizzlies, and 30-ft from Bison. This picture was taken on 12 August 2015, Sig...

I stood exactly where you stood when you took this picture, about seven weeks later. I wonder if the wolf was still around? Isn't that the most gorgeous place?
