Description

Old Faithful Geyser is the world's best known geyser. Its eruption intervals have varied from 45 to 126 minutes. At the time of my visit in August 2015 the interval between eruptions was given as 90 minutes +/- 10 minutes. There are many geysers in New Zealand and Iceland, but nowhere are there as many as in Yellowstone. At the heart of Yellowstone's past, present, and future lies volcanism. About 2 million years ago, then 1.3 million years ago, and again 640,000 years ago, huge volcanic eruptions occurred here. The latest eruption spewed out 240 cubic miles of debris. The central part of what is now the park collapsed, forming a 30 by 45 mile caldera. The magmatic heat powering those eruptions still powers the park's geysers, fumaroles, and mudspots. There are some 1,000 miles of backcountry trails within the park Driving from the South entrance of Yellowstone Park to Old Faithful one crosses the Continental Divide three times. In 1872 Congress made Yellowstone the world's first national park (Source: Park Service brochure). This picture was taken on 12 August 2015, Sig... .

A great photo of the old girl.

Last time we were there was 1973 - high time for a return visit. This is my all-time favorite park - a truly awesome and amazing place.

Looking at cross-sections of the magma chamber below Yellowstone is a bit scary - the thing extends hundreds of miles below the surface. It's almost beyond comprehension.

very beautiful Sig

I did not make it over there because of bridge repair, otherwise it would have been a very long drive to return the same way

The parking lot at Old Faithful was so crowded, the idea of parking and getting out and waiting to see this was daunting. I think Bill would have been happy to park and brave the crowds, but I just couldn't face it, so we went back out to the road and continued on our way. We say plenty of geysers without fighting to see this one! That being said, I'm thrilled that YOU went in and got this picture! :) Having seen the others, I've got a much better idea of what Old Faithful is like now, seeing your photograph.

@Auntietk: Tara I know exactly what you are talking about. When I got to the geyser it had just completed to do its show. There were so many people there that I had to cruise around the parking lot and was lucky to find a 'Handicapped' parking spot. After buying a few knickknacks I walked to the geyser and we sat on a bench and watched minor attempts of the geyser to erupt and watched a squirrel trying to get some food from the people. I had been here in 1978 and the pictures I had taken then I can't find. So I figured I didn't come all the way up here and skip the show. I figured I just make up the lost time later by driving a little faster later!!! As good an excuse as any. But you are right, there are many other geysers that erupt and they look just about the same, except for the height and nobody really cares how high the eruption is!
