what a great homage to Briana that you've featured her in these two mystical images. Your poem evokes the ancient sense of the moon...a center of all cycles, birth and rebirth; and of the unconscious and deeper oceans of self, as contrasted with the conscious part of day; which you've illuminated simply and beautifully in your poem. Some Southeastern Native American tribes said that the moon was the male, while the sun was the female; and the male got his light from the great sun goddess, whose role it is to shed light on all things, including on the unconscious. So she's still nurturer, but as the sun rather than the moon. (A feminist reversal.) But more commonly, the moon is associated with the female, and certainly with mystery and revelation. This image of Briana is doused in gentle purples and blues---some are intense, but many are more 'pastel' in quality: delicate hues, transitional hues, evoking those threshold feelings at the core of inner experience. And you have your common and beautiful sprinkling of lights everywhere; and a big beautiful moon. And you've painted a kind of folklore moon on her back (with a smaller one in her hair), which gives a folklore feeling to the image---the moon plays such a major role in folklore, this feels totally natural. I'm not sure if those are tears in the big moon's eyes, or just accents; but tears would be fitting for a goddess who sees into the inner mysteries of mind and soul; not because they're all sad, but because she sees them, and therefore knows our innermost secrets. Tears of recognition, at long last...and of bearing the burdens we all have in ourselves.
It's the same photo, I assume, and I really like that you chose this one, because while she's facing away from us, she gently turns towards us, to acknowledge us; and it feels like a gesture of invitation, saying she's moving forward, and we should follow her. She looks back to acknowledge us and pulls us forward, kind of like the experience of gaining wisdom...we seek, we're recognized, we're called, we follow...Beautifully done once more, and very gentle (showing the many sides of your art---those alcohol-based paintings are explosive, by comparison). But filled with the same spirit as all the others. Beautiful.

Mark, thanks so much for your beautiful comment. When I picked this pose, and did the moon artwork, I was thinking of the moon goddess, looking down and seeing the secrets and souls of all of us earthly creatures. It's so interesting that this is what you saw in this artwork. I think we have all stood beneath a big full moon, gazing at the glowing orb of light, filled with all kinds of different emotions, and felt a cosmic connection in some way. There is just something comforting about looking up at a darkened sky and finding a full moon. To me it is like a big guiding light. I love what you said about her encouraging us to follow her, the way she pulls us forward, helping us move on. Because I have had the honor of seeing Briana move through different phases and cycles of her life, from being with her when she was born, to knowing her as a beautiful young woman, it seemed very fitting that she would be a Moon Goddess. And I am looking forward to exploring other aspects of her huge spirit with other goddesses, as well.
