Description

Saint Mary Lake( surface elevation 4,484-ft [1,366 m]) and 'Going-to-the-Sun Road'. Saint Mary Lake is on the east side of Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, Montana. The haze is from a forest fire that has been burning for several weeks. A couple of weeks prior to my arrival the Going-to -the- Sun road was closed as the fire that had started near the lake crossed the road. As a result of this fire all pullouts and observation points along Going-to-the-Sun road were closed for about 6 miles. Driving through that section of the burned forest was eerie. At the time of my visit the fire had burned about 15,000 acres and was still burning high up in the mountains and it had not been determined whether the fire was human or lightning caused.
