Description

The Columbia Icefields Discovery Center is located at the divide between two National Parks in Alberta, Canada. In the foreground is the Icefields Parkway (highway 93). To the right (North) is Jasper National Park and to the left (South) is Banff National Park. Straight ahead is the Athabasca Glacier.. The Athabasca Glacier at one time, more than 100 years ago, extended nearly to what is now highway 93. Buses take interested people at a stiff fee up to a point on the glacier and from there tracked vehicles take them on a guided tour further up the glacier. Athabasca Glacier extends for a couple of miles up the mountains and is one of several glaciers that make up the Columbia Icefields and are the source of the Athabasca and the North Fork of the Saskatchewan Rivers. The weather was lousy, light steady rain, a stiff steady breeze, and the temperature is 43F, a big difference from only two days earlier. No chance of a forest fire here. This scene reminds me of Tmmelsjoch (or Passorombo) a pass between Austria and Italy. It was very foggy when we were at the top (2474 m high !) Great capture !
