It was evening and Nyra was with her boat preparing it for the trip home when she heard a faint yelp coming from the woods. "That's not a bird," she thought. "It sounds more like a wolf pup." Nyra tried to ignore it, but the yelping didn't stop and she couldn't shake a growing feeling that the little creature needed help. Nyra told herself, "venturing into the woods at night is not a good idea! But maybe it's not very far, there's a full moon and if I light the boat's lantern it will help guide me back. I think the creature needs help and I must at least try." Decision made she followed the yelping into the trees, but it wasn't long before she started having second thoughts. Every step took her deeper into the woods and there were sounds of night creatures all around her. Nyra knew it was time to turn around but kept telling herself, "just a little further." She continued to follow the little call until the trees abruptly stopped. Nyra also stopped, in the clearing ahead she saw strange shapes. At first she remained frozen, but quickly realized it was another site with ruins. She was standing on the edge of a clearing that was littered with stone columns. Many had fallen and laid broken on the ground but it was clear they had once formed boarders for a plaza. "This must have been an important meeting place, it is an amazing discovery." Then the yelping sound drew her attention to a mound of rocks in the center. "Curious, the yelping seems to be coming from inside that mound." It was at that moment she saw a faint light escaping from the top and she gasped. "That is not a mound, it is the entrance to a cave!" Her mind started racing, "As far as I know this island is completely deserted, what then, or who, is making the light?" With that thought she became very frightened and wanted to turn and run. She would have done just that except for the little yelping sound. With an effort she forced herself to calmed down, then taking another look at the surroundings she said softly "that light is steady, if it was fire light it would be flickering and I see no other signs of any inhabitants. "Curiosity started to replace the fear and very cautiously she crept into the clearing and headed towards the mound. ----- Thank you Jean_C for the inspiration to do a continuing adventure for Nyra, I hope you like!
