Description

This view of Mt. Baker is from Port Townsend, Olympic Peninsula, about 60 miles (~100 km) distance as the crow flies. Mount Baker is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington in the United States. Mount Baker has the second-most thermally active crater in the Cascade Range after Mount Saint Helens. It is located about 31 miles (50 km) due east of the City of Bellingham, Whatcom County. After Mount Rainier, Mount Baker is the most heavily glaciated of the Cascade Range volcanoes; the volume of snow and ice on Mount Baker, 0.43 cu mi (1.79 cu km) is greater than that of all the other Cascade volcanoes (except Mount Rainier) combined. It is also one of the snowiest places in the world; in 1999, Mount Baker Ski Area, located 14 km (8.7 mi) to the northeast, set the world record for recorded snowfall in a single season -- 1,140 in (2,900 cm). At 10, 781-ft (3,286 m), it is the third-highest mountain in Washington State and the fifth-highest in the Cascade Range (Source: Wikipedia). In 1964, while stationed at Paine Field, WA south of Everett, my room mate and I drove up to Mt. Baker on highway 584 in May. It was a clear, sunny day and at one point, well short of the Chalet, the snow on both sides of the road was piled up as high as the two-lane highway was wide. It almost felt like we were driving in a tunnel. In 2000, using up a free ticket we received from America West Airline while delayed in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, I decided to fly to Seattle, rent a car, drive to Campbell River on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and buy smoked salmon. Having some time left before returning to Phoenix, I drove up Mount Baker. At the Artist Point Trailhead parking lot, as high as one can drive up the mountain, the snow that had been cleared from the parking lot to allow parking, was in it compacted state still about 20-ft high. And that was in early September, by the end of the summer and just before the new winter season started. I did not know at the time that the previous year the mountain had received a record snow fall. This picture was taken on 18 August 2015, Sig... .

It looks a lot bigger from that vantage point than I'm used to seeing from where I live in Kirkland. After all these years I'm still amazed on sunny days that I can see so many volcanoes around the area!

The Cascades are so amazing...sometimes shrouded in clouds and sometimes as in this shot where the snow makes it almost look like a cloud instead of a mountain. Here in the Netherlands sometimes the clouds look like mountains on the horizon and we call them Dutch mountains. Thanks for sharing this fantastic view of Mt Baker.

Ahhh ... home! :) I love driving north on I-5 and seeing Baker on a clear day. It appears to get larger and smaller, depending upon one's vantage point. A fascinating effect!
