Description

Hello friends, thanks for your interest in my yesterday pic about David Bowie and his time in Berlin! We wrote 1976, when David Bowie came to West - Berlin. With him came his friend IGGY POP from the Stooges. They both came from L.A. with a short stop in Switzerland. Iggy Pop created a new and expressive music style we later called "PUNK", and today we call Iggy Pop as "Godfather of Punk". Iggy Pop had great problems with drugs and alcohol abuse in this days, and so had David. Both were junkies, they were signed by father death. David Bowie got his first shelter by a West-Berlinian comrade, a musician, too. His name was EDGAR FROESE, and he was the founder of the later very famous Berlin electronic rockband "TANGERINE DREAM". Bowie lived in Edgars flat in Berlin - Schoeneberg together with Edgar and his family for some weeks and began a strong and dangerous "Cold Turkey" to fight against his heroine consume for some weeks. Than Bowie and Iggy Pop rent their own flat with seven rooms in the Potsdamer Street 155, where they lived for their whole Berlin time. Bowies flat is situated some blocs away from Edgar Froeses. David often used the bars and restaurants around, and it was an open secret: "Shhh, have you heard, David Bowie lives here, I have seen him yesterday at ....." Today the Berlin tourism industry offers "David Bowie Tours" with all important places, and "Potsdamer Street 155" is a well known adress to young party people all over the world. (To be continued) Thanks for your interest! Please feel free to send comments, they are all welcome and helpful. billcody, Berlin at ghost hour..

Great tribute to an extraordinary musician. I know him since his song "Space Oddity", I think that was in 1969 or '70.
