Description

Driving south on California State Route 1 through Point Reyes Station I saw this International Harvester four wheel on a trailer on a side street. I made an instant turn and went to see it. Watching Wayne Carini's TV show 'Chasing Classic Cars', I became interested in following classic car finds, purchases, restorations. and shows. A barn find refers to an old and/or classic car that had been out of circulation for a number of years and reasons. Some barn finds have been out of the public eye for decades, and, depending on the find, i.e. make and model of car, its reputation as a make, and/or model, its rarity, condition, matching numbers (verifying originality), ownership history and so on a perceived value is attached to it. Some classic 'barn finds' have fetched close to $200,000. It is important that the dirt (patina) that has accumulated over the years when it was stored, is not disturbed, since it adds to the value of the find. Whether the finder chooses to restore the car himself, or sells it to someone else for restoration, is determined on how much money can be made. I did not ask this guy what he had in mind with this car. This International Harvester on the trailer had an Oregon license plate on the front bumper, so I assumed he found it there and hauled it to Point Reyes Station on this trailer. On a high value classic car, like a Duesenberg, or Packard, a Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes 300 SL, BMW 507, old Porsche, Cobra etc. if they were barn finds, the history of the particular car is very important. In case of a sports car, has it been raced, won, crashed or had a particular engine, who had driven it etc. To restore the car to mint condition, have it certified (in case of a Ferrari by the factory) and taken to a Concours d'Elegance to have it judged, as to originality and perfection of the restoration, often exceeding the original car quality, the goal is to achieve 100 points, i.e. a perfect score. Points are deducted for non-original parts, and other minor imperfections, like flawed paint. Based on the point value achieved, or if the car wins the competition, the cars value increases tremendously. The most prestigious Concours d'Elegance locations in the United States are probably Pebble Beach, CA and Amelia Island, FL The market for these cars fluctuates, but recently is going up. In 2012. a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO became the most expensive car ever sold at an auction, fetching $32 million. Then, just a few months later, a 1962 GTO sold for $35 million, plus 10% commission. Ferraris are the most expensive cars ever sold, and are in a class by themselves. But there are many other cars that sell for multi-million dollars. I have no idea how much this guy paid for this International Harvester, or what he has in mind for it, but it is a save to assume that he is hoping to make money.. I have driven through Point Reyes Station (about 13 miles SSE of Tomales) before, in either direction and going to the peninsula, but every time I drive through this little, unincorporated community I think about the San Andres Fault, which is the boundary between the Pacific and North American Tectonic Plates and runs directly through the center of this community, and I always hope that the tension between the two plates hasn't built up to a point that there is a slip, resulting in an earthquake, just when I am there. In Point Reyes Station is the junction where one turns off to visit the peninsula, to see the lighthouse or the Marconi Station. In the late 19th century farms on the peninsula provided produce for the city of San Francisco and on 17 June 1579 Sir Francis Drake (sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician) anchored here, at what is now known as Drakes Bay, to make repairs to his ship while on his circumnavigation (1577-1579).(Source: Wikipedia). in good condition they are valuable. there are a few around here that have been restored. I seldom see them however. I liked the early 4 wheel drive vehicles style, more so than the current. I would like very much to have an old Toyota Land Cruiser, but the gas tank is under the driver's seat. besides they are way out of my league money wise. the early Broncos are valuable also

I love the explanation behind this picture. It's funny to see how peoples love old cars despite the fact that they were less comfortable and secure than nowadays. I think peoples want to collect a bit of History :-)
