I find myself with mixed emotions as I view this photo. From a purely aesthetic point of view, it's a brilliant, perfectly balanced composition with a great range of gray tones & very appealing textures & so, in that sense, it's pleasurable to the eye. But the subject, of course, is a tragic one - a human being reduced to having to live on the street - & that brings out emotions in me - sadness, pity & anger - that are not pleasurable at all.

Generally, my approach to photography is to try to capture beauty (or things that are mysterious or strange) wherever I can find them & so I tend to avoid photos of people in bad situations. I'm also wary of intruding on their privacy & of crossing the line into exploitation of their suffering. That's just my own attitude, though & is not in any way a criticism of you or your photo - I think it's important that subjects like this are documented & that people who may not see this kind of thing very often are made aware (or reminded) that our society allows people to live in such circumstances (while spending billions on wars & frivolous luxuries). Some people blame the homeless for making poor choices in life & that may certainly be true in some cases, but for me, that doesn't absolve wealthy, civilized societies from making a better effort to improve their lives.

If your purpose in taking this photo was to provoke difficult thoughts & emotions, I believe you succeeded...
