Description

Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are also called' Sierra Redwoods' or 'Big Tree' can live to over 3,000 years. Over their long lifespan they are exposed to harsh winter conditions, drought, heavy precipitation and forest fires. Chemical Tannins in the bark and wood resists disease, rot, and insects. The thick fibrous bark provides superior insulation against fire with little flammable sap, it doesn't burn easily. During forest fires the air current near the ground has a tendency to flow uphill. for this reason any fire on the downhill side of a tree trunk gets extinguished sooner while on the uphill side of the trunk fires linger on and create over time these massive scars. They do not kill the tree, but when there are adverse conditions, like a heavy snow load, high winds, or a softening of the ground due to heavy precipitation, the trees base may become unstable, somewhat less supported on the fire scar side of the trunk and the massive weight of the tree may help topple it, usually toward uphill, i.e. the fire scar side. I'm always amazed that they look like "normal" trees until you see a human next to them to put it all into perspective. Super shot of this giant beauty!
