Description

Instead of a welcome mat, we have a sculpture to end all sculptures, captured back on 2/16/08, in a neighbor's patio of my condominium complex. Looks kind of dirty. I'll have to check to see if they've hosed it off since then.

Fine shot of this Chinese lion (otherwise known as a "Foo Dog")...

He's a friendly-looking neighbor, look at that smile ;) Some amount of dirt does help define the structure, so I'd give him a slide on that. WOnderful shot, Harry!

Yes, as Claude says, these are commonly known as "foo dogs" in the west. But in China they're called other things. (Shi is a common name, which means, if I recall, "lion".) Your composition is angled really nicely, and the other elements play off of the sculpture beautifully, both in shape and in dark/light hues. I also really like the high light in the front of the statue. And you caught the more violet hues of the beast too. Beautifully and thoughtfully caught, Harry. Worthy of art-object photography. (These were guardian animals for "important people" in the Chinese dynasties; and you can see the characteristic Chinese designs: Those curls in his hair---so stylized and spaced out---go back to the fire of ancient dragon myths; and the wave-like eyebrows have that 'fire" too. It's also spirit. And I love how they wear dog collars, lol---like you expect to find a tag that says "Fido".) A fine, sensitive capture of a difficult subject. I love the light and shadow you caught.

(Here are 3 Chinese bronzes, where you can see those curls and waves of fire, spirit and water... https://igavelauctions.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/CC_ShangBronze-6.jpg
