Description

The General Sherman Tree, a Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is currently the largest known, living, single stem tree on Earth. It is not the tallest, nor has it the thickest diameter trunk, but it is the largest tree by volume. It stands in Giant Forest, Sequoia National Park, California. Statistics: Estimated Age:.............................2,300-2,700 Years Estimated Weight of Trunk:......... 1,385 tons (1,256 metric tons) Height Above Base:..................... 274.9-ft (83.8 m) Circumference at Ground:........... 102.8-ft (31.3 m) Maximum Diameter at Base:........ 36.5-ft (11.1 m) Diameter 60-ft Above Ground:..... 17.5-ft (5.3 m) Diameter 180-ft Above ground:.... 14.0-ft (4.3 m) Diameter of Largest Branch:......... 6.8-ft (2.1 m) Height of First Large Branch:....... 130.0-ft (39.8 m) Volume of Trunk:.......................... 52,500 cu.ft. (1,486.6 cu.m.) The crown of the General Sherman is dead, so it doesn't grow any taller, yet it is one of the fastest growing trees. Each year it adds the equivalent of a 60-ft tall trees volume of wood to its trunk. (Source: Sequoia National Park Brochure). This picture was taken on 22 August 2015, Sig...

Nice to see it after reading about it from time to time. I can well imagine a dinosaur or mammoth passing by this giant. Wonderful photo. When in Yosemite I wasn't able to get trees full height into my photos. Did you use wide angle to get the whole length into the photo? Keep up the good work! :-)

@T.Rex: I used the widest possible setting on this little camera and i was far enough away to get the entire tree in the picture!

The tree was purportedly named after the American Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman in 1879 by naturalist James Wolverton who had served as a lieutenant in the 9th Indiana Cavlary under Sherman (Source: Wikipedia).

In February 1978, a 4-ft diameter, 140-ft long (43 m), 20-tonne branch collapsed from the tree (Source: Wikipedia).

Exactly for this National Park would also go in September my friend. She told me about this Sherman Tree, but that it is so powerful, I would not have thought! Fabulous photo!
