Description

Coming from the Sequoia National Park and driving south on highway 65 through Porterville towards Bakersfield I came on this view. Oil derricks and storage tanks on both sides of the highway. It was sort of a rude awakening, until I realized that oil production was always an important part of the California economy. The highway ran through the Kern River Oil Field, a large oil field in San Joaquin Valley north-northeast of Bakersfield in the Lower Sierra Foothills. This oil field is the third largest oil field in California and it had produced close to 2 billion barrels of crude by the end of 2006. Annual production from the field was 26.2 million barrels in 2012. This picture was taken on 22 August 2015, Sig...

"crude" as it maybe an outstanding subject and capture. not different than Texas and Oklahoma. in Oklahoma there is a derrick outside of the capital building in OKC

These wells were a constant presence in my childhood in southern California, their inexorable bowing always visible on the edges of our daily lives. Excellent capture of a common scene down that way!

Yup, oil is big in Cal. Like Richard says, it reminds me of Texas.

Hard to look at this after the beautiful forest scenes but I guess one has to have the oil. I'm glad I don't live near them. 😄

Although I worked for a big oil company (as a computer analyst) for many years, I hope that we can wean ourselves off this form of energy in the next few decades & that this becomes as rare a sight as a photo of an extinct species...

@photosynthesis; It would be nice if we could equip a new car with a small amount of fissionable nuclear material, i.e. after 10 years or so the material is burned up and there is no radioactive material left. Or a very efficient solar powered car, or hydrogen. It will come, eventually!
