Description

Locomotive No. 539, a 2-8-2, was built for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1917. The locomotive ran on various lines, including the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, for 40 years before being retired to a civic monument in Vancouver's, WA, Esther Short Park. The locomotive was then moved to Battle Ground before being displaced by a park project. Grand Canyon Railroad acquired locomotive No. 539 in exchanged for two of the Railway's smaller locomotives - No.18 and No. 20. The Railway has converted No. 539 to operate on ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel , refitting the draft apparatus of the engine, and remodeling of the steam engine boiler feeder system. These modifications make it possible for the steam locomotive to burn less fuel and use less water than the conventional steam engines. This picture was taken at the Grand Canyon Railroad Yard at Williams, Arizona on 27 February 2016, Sig..

Isn't it lovely to see these beautiful old engines kept so well and still in running order. There was something about the sound of their whistle that I truly loved though getting my clothes dirty on a trip wasn't the best . ☺

Great capture...when I was there there was too much busy-ness around the train area. I did not even try. And thanks for the historical info also.
